XRP at $1: The Shorts Are Crowded, but the Whales Are Silent

ETF | CryptoTiger |

The wallets are silent. The perpetuals are screaming. Over the past two weeks, Binance XRP open interest has climbed 28.6%—from $181 million to $232.7 million. Yet the Cumulative Volume Delta has plunged to negative $463 million. That's a classic short buildup. Meanwhile, whale deposits to the exchange have hit a four-year low of $61 million on a three-month average. The combination leaves the market with crowded bearish bets and thinning sell-side supply.

From ICO chaos to crystalline clarity, I've been tracking XRP flows since 2017. Back then, I spent weeks manually crawling wallet addresses, uncovering insider accumulation patterns before the rally. Today, the data tells a different story—one where the crowd is screaming fear, but the on-chain footprints suggest a quieter, more deliberate force at work.

Context: The $1 Psychological Barrier

XRP has been struggling to hold the $1 level. At press time, it trades at $0.998, down 0.4% on the day. The broader market is bearish, with sentiment across X, Reddit, and Telegram hitting a three-month bearish peak, according to Santiment. But while the noise is loud, the on-chain activity tells a different tale. Active addresses spiked to 49,929 in a single 24-hour span—the highest in over two months.

This is the setup I've seen before. During the 2022 crash, I tracked 10,000 ETH moving from exchanges to cold storage, identifying a silent accumulation phase. The same pattern is emerging here, but with a twist: the shorts are piling in aggressively.

Core: The On-Chain Evidence Chain

Let's break down the numbers. Binance XRP open interest rebuilt sharply after a July contraction. The seven-day change flipped from negative $40 million on July 29 to positive $38.9 million by August 17. That's a 28.6% increase in two weeks—the highest reading since June 2026. But direction matters. The Binance perpetual CVD fell to negative $463.2 million, showing aggressive sell-side execution continued while positions expanded.

“The combination of rising open interest and declining perpetual CVD is consistent with new bearish positions being added, rather than the move being driven only by existing longs closing,” analyst Amr Taha noted.

Spot markets confirm the tilt. All-CEX estimated spot CVD swung from about positive $153 million on August 3 to negative $231.8 million—a shift of nearly $385 million toward net selling.

But here's the kicker: whale deposits are collapsing.

Binance whale inflows dropped to $61 million on a three-month average, their lowest level since 2021. For comparison, those inflows reached $456 million in January 2025 and $355 million in October. Netflows remain positive at roughly $18.8 million, meaning deposits still outweigh withdrawals—but barely. Analyst Darkfost described this as a “pattern across the entire market where inflows and volumes are declining, pointing to a form of sell-side exhaustion, while demand hasn’t yet picked up the slack.”

Whales don’t hide; they just swim in deeper waters. When large holders stop sending coins to exchanges, it signals that they are unwilling to sell at current prices. The sell-side supply is thinning. Yet the market is piling on shorts. This is the classic setup for a short squeeze, but only if demand returns.

Contrarian: The Crowd Is Bearish, but the Data Says Otherwise

The obvious narrative is bearish: short buildup, price below $1, sentiment at a three-month low. But the contrarian angle is that whale deposits collapsing is not a sign of weakness—it's a sign of conviction. The shorts are crowded. If any positive catalyst hits, the squeeze could be violent.

Santiment noted: “With on-chain activity high, this is the counter-signal bulls want to see. Fear is loud. Participation is rising. If XRP holds structure and demand returns, today’s negativity could become tomorrow’s discounted entry narrative.”

I've seen this movie before. In 2020, during DeFi Summer, I tracked liquidity flows and noticed that 3,000 ETH moving from retail wallets into Curve pools signaled institutional accumulation days before the price spike. The same pattern is emerging here: whale deposits are drying up, while shorts are overextended.

Parsing the noise to find the signal’s heartbeat. The correlation here is not causation—rising OI and falling CVD could also be longs hedging. But the spot CVD confirms net selling. The whale deposit collapse is the real story. It suggests that the largest holders are not participating in the sell-off. They are waiting.

Takeaway: The Next Week Is Critical

If XRP can hold above $0.95 and we see a spike in exchange outflows, that's the signal that whales are accumulating. The shorts will be squeezed, and the price could snap back toward $1.20. But if whale deposits start rising again, the sell-side pressure will return, and $1 will become resistance.

Eyes wide open, data streams wide. The noise is loud, but the signal's heartbeat is in the wallet flows. The next seven days will tell us whether this is the calm before the storm or the quiet before the collapse.
