Public's AI Agent Market: A Centralized Trojan Horse for the Crypto Narrative

DeFi | CryptoCred |
The first AI agent marketplace for portfolios is not on Ethereum. It's not on Solana. It's on a SEC-registered broker-dealer. That should tell you everything about the gap between narrative and infrastructure. Last week, Public.com โ€“ a traditional fintech platform with millions of retail users and backing from Accel, Greylock, and a16z โ€“ announced the launch of its AI Agent Marketplace. The product lets users subscribe to AI-generated investment strategies that automatically rebalance portfolios of stocks, ETFs, and potentially crypto. The crypto media cycle exploded. AI agent tokens pumped. The narrative wrote itself: "Mainstream adoption of AI agents." But I don't trade on narratives. I trade on verifiable data. And the data here is damning. Let me be clear: Public's AI Agent Marketplace is a centralized, black-box product. It has no blockchain backend. It has no open-source code. It has no smart contract. It is a traditional SaaS platform wrapped in AI hype. The strategies are generated by proprietary models, executed on Public's servers, and governed by a single company's board. There is no way to audit the logic. There is no way to verify performance. There is no way to exit without trusting Public's continued compliance and solvency. Trust is a variable; verification is a constant. Public offers only the former. From my experience auditing the 0x Protocol v2 smart contracts, I learned that edge cases hide in the gaps between documentation and execution. Public has published no documentation. No technical whitepaper. No audit report. The only thing we have is a press release. Silence in the code is where the theft hides. Here, the silence is deafening. Compare this to decentralized AI agent platforms like Fetch.ai or Virtuals Protocol. Those projects run on public blockchains. Their code is on GitHub. Their strategies can be forked, tested, and criticized. Their governance involves token holders. Yes, many of those tokens are structurally flawed โ€“ governance tokens without dividends are just speculative tickets โ€“ but at least the architecture is transparent. Public is the opposite: a sealed box with a marketing label. The regulatory risk is the real story. Under the U.S. Investment Advisers Act of 1940, any entity that provides personalized investment advice for compensation must register with the SEC. AI strategies that allocate capital based on user profiles? That's advice. The SEC has been circling AI in finance for months. Chair Gensler has warned that AI could amplify systemic risk. Public's product, aimed at retail investors, is a walking test case. If the SEC decides that AI-generated strategies constitute investment advice, Public will need to register as an investment adviser, disclose algorithms, and prove no conflicts of interest. That's a multi-year legal battle waiting to happen. And if Public's AI agents can trade crypto? The regulatory crossfire between SEC and CFTC becomes a minefield. I've seen this play out. During the LUNA collapse, I spent months tracing the algorithmic stability loops. The difference was that Terra's code was open for anyone to dissect. Public's code is not. The only thing more dangerous than a bad algorithm is a hidden one. But the bulls have a point. Public's move legitimizes the AI agent narrative in a way no crypto project can. The average American investor trusts a registered broker-dealer more than a DAO. If Public's marketplace succeeds, it will educate millions of users on the concept of AI-managed portfolios. That education is a rising tide that could lift all boats โ€“ including decentralized alternatives. The compliance-first approach may also provide a blueprint for crypto AI agents to navigate the regulatory maze. I've seen this pattern before: centralized incumbents pave the road, then decentralized projects drive on it. Yet the irony is thick. The narrative of "democratization" is being used to sell a product that is anything but permissionless. Public's marketplace is a curated app store. The platform decides which AI agents are listed, what fees are charged, and when to pull the plug. Users cannot run their own strategies. They cannot audit the model. They cannot migrate their assets to another provider without selling and re-entering. That's not democratization. That's centralization with a friendly UI. Every exit liquidity pool leaves a footprint. In Public's case, the footprint is the exit button itself โ€“ a button that only works as long as Public stays solvent and compliant. The chain remembers. The centralized server forgets. So what should you do? Ignore the hype. Demand transparency. If you are investing in AI agent tokens, ask: Is the code open? Is the execution on-chain? Can I verify the strategy? If the answer is no to any of these, you are not an investor. You are a user of a black box. And black boxes, in crypto, have a tendency to break. Volatility is just noise; liquidity is the signal. The signal here is clear: the real AI agent innovation is happening on-chain, where code is law and verification is constant. Public's move is a distraction โ€“ a Trojan horse that carries the AI agent narrative into the mainstream while leaving the architecture of trust behind. Watch the regulators. Watch the code. And remember: the absence of an audit is not a feature. It's a warning.
